Benue State House of Assembly has condemn in strong terms recent plan by the Federal Government to establish Ruga settlements for Herdsmen with the claim that it would stop Open Grazing by Herdsmen and end Herdsmen/Farmers crises across the country.
The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hon Titus Uba rejected the move in Makurdi. Speaking to newsmen, he said ” I like to condemn in strong terms recent plan of the Federal Government to set Fulani Rugs Settlement across the country which has been approved by the President Buhari led administration. I hereby clearly state that the Federal Government of Nigeria cannot allocate land for the establishment of Ruga Fulani settlement in Benue State and the Benue State Government will not give out its land for Ruga settlement”
The speaker who described as questionable the settlement policy said the parliament will completely stand by the state government to implement the Open Grazing prohibition law. He said ” The Benue State House of Assembly as a parliament condemn in totality the plans by any individual, group of persons the Federal Government to allocate land any portion of land with Benue in questionable project. I categorically state that the Benue state House of Assembly reject the move for Fulani Ruga settlement in Benue State and instead support the full implementation of the open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law 2017 as rightly remain the global best practice”.
The 9th Assembly maintain the enforcement of the anti-open grazing and ranches establishment law of 2017 remains the solution to ending the pessisitent herders/farmer conflict.
