The Federal Ministry of Water Resources has embark on a journey towards an open defecation free campaign in Nigeria.
With aim of ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation by 2030, the Ministry has launched open defecation free website www.cleannigeria.ng.
Recall that on the 8th November, 2018, president Buhari launched the National water, sanitation and hygiene(WASH) Action plan and declared a state of emergency in the sector with a strong statement to end open defecation in the country by 2025.
Nigeria was rank the second among countries practicing open defecation, 47 million Nigerians practice open defecation
The Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu said, “The ministry in partners explored the Swachh Bharat mission which was put together by Indian Government to end Open Defecation in Indian by October, 2019.The SBN is an intensive behavior change campaign, which has significantly reduced the number of people practicing open defecation in Indian from 550million in 2014 to less than 100million in 2019, India built a social movement that involved the participation of everyone in the campaign. It is in this light that the Ministry is launching a website for the Open Defecation free campaign and making a call to action by all Nigerians”.
As part of the activities to commemorate the 2019 world water day, the Ministry with support from UNICEF, other partners and the media have developed a separate website for ODF campaign which will create awareness and sensitize the general public on the activities of the Clean Nigeria programme.
Adamu has called on Nigerians to follow the progress being made to end open defecation in the country.
