These are not the best of times for Adams Aliyu Oshiomohle, Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, former Governor, Edo State and former President, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.
Many were those who wondered at the palpable silence of this foremost labour leader as the Government and the Organised Labour were spoiling for a fight over the minimum wage. Unknown to many, Oshiomohle was having his own baptism of fire in the hands of the dreaded Department of Security Service, popularly known as SSS.
For a couple of days, the party Chairman was said to have been held by the security agency over a plethora of allegations of misdeeds that attended to the APC primaries. He was said to have helped himself with billions of various currencies offered by some aspirants who now emerged as party flag bearers thus burying the ambition of qualified candidates. There were allegations of flagrant breach of due process in the cause of the party primaries which resulted in fracas that now threatens the very foundation of the party.
Political observers have posited that a good number of state chapters of APC may not recover from the rancours arising from the primaries before the next election. States like Imo, Zamfara, Rivers and Ogun are neck deep in crisis over who should fly the party’s flag in the 2019 general elections. In fact, the party has not been able to field candidates for certain offices because of the primary fiasco.
As at Press time, Oshiomohle’s party has claimed to be unaware of the purported drilling of the party Chairman by the DSS even when it was said that it was Yahaya Bello, Governor of Kogi State that bailed him out of the gulag.
Reports have it that Oshiomohle has, upon his release, traveled to the United States of America on an undisclosed mission. This has not gone down well with analysts who feel that the embattled Chairman should not have been allowed to travel abroad in the spirit of Executive Order 6, which forbids any body being investigated for corruption from traveling abroad.
There are fears that these developments surrounding the party Chairman will help the chances of the party in the forthcoming election being keenly contested by the opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP.
