The recent endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term by tiny group of individuals from the Igbo extraction with a promise to deliver the entire South East to the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, has been described as a fake promise, adding that Buhari should not have faith in them.
Eastern Union, EU, a social political and cultural organization of old Eastern Central States of Nigeria, ECN, made the declaration while reacting to the purported promise to Buhari by Chekwas Okorie as an empty promise with the intent to beg for ministerial appointment from Buhari, should he win the election.
Recall that Igbo leaders had on Wednesday agreed to support the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, in the forthcoming 2019 election, an action alleged to have splinted the South-East.
The EU national Chairman, Hon. Charles Chibuzor Anike, told Daily mandate on phone while reacting to the recent visit of Okorie to Aso-Rock said Okorie can never speak for Igbo race.
According to him, “who is Okorie to where Igbo leaders like elder statesman, Prof. Ben Nwabueze” who urged on the Igbos to do him the honour of achieving Atiku’s success.
The National Chairman, UPP, Chief Chekwas Okorie, after a closed-door meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, announced the adoption of President Muhammadu Buhari as its candidate for the 2019 polls.
Okorie, who doubles as the coordinator of Igboezue, said the group had adopted Buhari because it believed that doing so would pave the way for the emergence of an Igbo President in 2023.
But Anike poured cold water on Okorie’s claim and said Okorie is seeking for a job in Buhari’s cabinet adding that he has no electoral value in the zone.
According to Anike, Okorie is peddling lies if he claimed that he could deliver South East to Buhari, adding that the President in the last three years neglected the zone in his infrastructural development and appointment policies.
“We are supporting Atiku because we believe he will reposition the Country. Atiku is a bridge builder who will surely ensure adequate security, create enabling environment and level playing field for all Nigerians, which is what our people needs to excel”, he added.
“His appointment of Mr. Peter Obi as his running mate is also an indication that our people will no longer be marginalized. We also believe that with Atiku as a President of Nigeria, he will implement the end of civil war agreement; of the 3Rs (Reconciliation, Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Ndigbo in Nigeria).
“We also believe that he will balance our quota in the armed forces, and police, civil service, and top political appointments. And by his promise of restructuring, the Country will go a long way to end the activities of political demagogues in the country”.
