Senate Presidency: why Akpabio defects to APC

Fresh facts have emerged on why Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former Senate Minority Leader and former governor of Akwa-Ibom State, dumped his party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and defected to All Progressive Congress, APC two months ago.

Our source, a member of the senate disclosed that the Akpabio left PDP in a quest to become the Senate President should APC wins the 2019 presidential election.

According to our source, who wouldn’t want his name in print, Akpabio was promised to lead the Senate Chamber in the course of APC returning back to power.

It was gathered that the deal was sealed at the Bourdillon House in Lagos during the defection period that rocked the parties.

APC is said to have zoned the senate presidency to South-South, which was the motivating factor that lured the amiable governor to APC.

He promised the national leadership of the APC that he will install an APC governor in the state in 2019, as his followers have all joined him to APC.

But against the run of play, Akpabio, earlier this week, told his teeming supporters while he left PDP.

He made the disclosure during the flag-off of the entrepreneurship and agricultural disbursement of cash grants to his constituents in conjunction with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, SMEDAN.

Speaking, Akpabio described the PDP has a sinking ship. The ex-governor said he defected to APC because he discovered that the former ruling party was about to sink.

Speaking in Ikot Ekpene area of the state, Akpabio, who is representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State, said:

‘’You gave me the ticket in 2015 to represent you on the platform of PDP. When I saw that PDP was about to sink, I left for APC. And I can assure you that victory is sure in APC and I thank APC for giving me the ticket unopposed”, he added.

‘’During the 18 years of PDP, we didn’t have anything more than the Ministers and Ambassadors, but President Muhammadu Buhari has given us so many things. Works have begun on Ikot Ekpene-Calabar Road, the Ikot Ekpene-Aba road will be dualised and it will be included in the 2019 budget. The Oron-Calabar Road and bridges will be done. You can see why I went to APC. I want you to use the money to start a business. We will monitor it but we are not going to ask you to repay it.’’
