You Dino me I Bello you!
Kogi politics is fast turning into a home video. The key actors are the foremost politicians in the state, one the chief executive and the other a law maker.
Just as it was in the politics of the old Benue Plateau now Benue State, where the rivalry between Joseph Tarka and Godwin Dabo gave rise to the saying that “You Takar me, I Dabo you”, so we now have in Kogi State the refrain: “You Dino me, I Bello you ” to summarize the cut- throat political duel between Yahaya Bello, Governor of Kogi State and Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West.
The Senator is reputed for being the key player in the emergence of Bello as the Governor of Kogi State when the man who would have become governor died while coasting to victory in the gubernatorial election. But there has been no love lost between the two political gladiators when Dino turned out to become so censorious of Bello, and is now reputed for being the governor’s strongest critic over what Dino termed to be the govenor’s lack luster performance.
No sooner than Dino’s voice against Bello became loud that the process of recalling Dino ensued. While Dino is battling to put off the recall fire, a criminal charge of gun running has been initiated against him in Kogi State.
Political pundits believe that the contest between Bello and Dino is over who occupies the Lugard House as Kogi State Government house is called, come 2019. It is believed that both Dino and Bello are fighting over nothing as they are both from disadvantaged ethnic groups, none of which can produce governor in the face of the dominant tribe.
According to analysts, Bello would have stood a better chance being an incubent but for his unenviable performance, pointing at mounting unpaid salaries and the state’s infrastructural barrenness. Dino’s perceived opulence is said to give the impression that he is at variance with the servant leader that Kogi sorely needs.
The last is yet to be heard between Dino and Bello! Perhaps, an anti-climax!
